BizSpark Launch

Today was the launch of BizSpark, an initiative of Microsoft to help startups in their pursuit of success. Firstly, I would just like to say that it is extremely heartening to know that the Singapore government has many agencies with a wide range of initiatives to help promote young local startups. However, there is a limit to how much the government can do, therefore startups are often confronted with issues such as lack of support, funding or visibility.

With initiatives from large companies that have the power to help startups such as Singtel, Apple and now Microsoft, it is becoming easier to walk this tough journey of pushing a startup. This post would focus on what BizSpark offers and how I think it can help MyWobile as well as other startups.

  1. Free Software
Microsoft offers a comprehensive set of software for all purposes. Since a lot of startups nowadays are related to interactive digital media, we need development and server software. However, the cost of getting Microsoft software is an issue for startups where every cent counts. Of course, open source software is available, but it may not be what startups need. With BizSpark, we get access to Microsoft software at no cost for three years. Isn’t that great for a cost-cutting startup?
  2. Networking Opportunities
While BizSpark is still new, I believe that it will offer plenty of networking opportunities in the future. Networking is very important for startups, since we often can’t do everything by ourselves in this increasingly complex and speedy world. From time to time, we need to work with partners to deliver the best that each of us can offer. BizSpark may help make it easier.
  3. Visibility
Free advertisement on Microsoft’s BizSpark site. Enough said. :)

While I do not know how BizSpark will contribute to the success of startups fast forward a few years, I do think that it is extremely exciting. Every startup ought to take a look at this:
